DRAMA
LOVERS SERIES
The
Drama Lovers Series is not for the faint of heart. The authors are some of the
best dramatic authors of our time: Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, William
Faulkner and Eugene O’Neill.
The series is American drama at its best and some of the plays can only be described as intense, powerful, sad and sometimes tragic.
If you love drama, you’ll love the Drama Lovers Series.
PAUL NEWMAN......................... CAT ON A HOT TIN
ROOF
ELIZABETH TAYLOR
BURL IVES ..................................BY
TENNESSEE
WILLIAMS 108 MIN
This
dynamic and commanding adaptation of Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning
play focuses on a troubled Southern family and the discord over their dying
father's millions. Wealthy plantation owner Big Daddy Pollitt (Burl Ives),
celebrating his 65th birthday, is visited by his sons, Brick (Paul Newman) and
Gooper (Jack Carson). He has cancer, but a doctor has deliberately and falsely
declared it in remission. Seemingly perfect son Gooper and his wife Mae
(Madeleine Sherwood) have several children and are anxiously expecting to
inherit Daddy's millions. By contrast, Big Daddy's "favorite," Brick, is a
has-been football star who's taken to drinking his days away since the suicide
of his "best friend" a year earlier. He resents his wife, Maggie (Elizabeth
Taylor), because he believes that she had an affair with his deceased friend. As
a result, he refuses to sleep with her although she remains devoted to him.
Since Brick and Maggie have failed to produce any grandchildren, Big Daddy is
inclined to leave his estate to Gooper, but Maggie attempts to prevent that by
telling him that she is pregnant. Big Daddy knows better, yet he recognizes that
Maggie loves Brick so much that she would be willing to do anything for him.
Although Brick is self-destructive and resentful, unable to come to terms with
his losses, it takes Big Daddy's recognition of his own mortality to make Brick
change his perspective. This intelligently written and acted film covers such
topics as infertility, adultery, and alcoholism that were still considered taboo
in the 1950's. Newman brings depth and feeling to the role as Brick, while
Taylor succeeds brilliantly in portraying Maggie as a passionate and
understanding woman.

MARLON BRANDO........ A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE 125 MIN
VIVIEN
LEIGH ................BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS
KIM HUNTER
KARL MALDEN
Marlon Brando reprised his role as Stanley Kowalski in Elia Kazan's magnificent
screen version of Tennessee Williams's great American play, A Streetcar Named
Desire, re-creating on film the standard-setting performance that wowed Broadway
audiences. As the virile, blue-collar brute Stanley, Brando's sensuality takes
the breath away. And Vivian Leigh is heartbreaking in her Oscar-winning
portrayal of Blanche Dubois, a ravaged Southern belle clinging to faded notions
of Southern gentility until her brother-in-law shatters her delusions forever.
Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, both of whom appeared in the stage version, also won
Oscars for their superb supporting performances. Although filmed entirely on
sets, no movie has ever captured the sultry, decaying atmosphere of New
Orleans's French Quarter as potently as this classic (it also won the 1951 Oscar
for Art Direction).

KATHERINE HEPBURN..... THE GLASS MANAGERIE........ 105
MIN
SAM WATERSTON.............. BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS
MICHAEL
MORIARITY
JOANNA MILES
Previously filmed in 1950, Tennessee Williams' 1944 Broadway hit The Glass
Menagerie was remade for television in 1973. Four time Oscar Winner, Katharine
Hepburn is Amanda Wingfield, an overbearing mother whose preoccupation with her
past as a southern belle and unrealistic dreams for her children, threaten to
smother her painfully shy daughter (Joanna Miles) and her aspiring writer son
(Sam Waterson). The play is set in a Depression-era St. Louis tenement. Sam
Waterston narrates the story as Amanda's idealistic son Tom, who'd give anything
to escape his mother's fantasy world. Tom's withdrawn, clubfooted sister Laura,
who maintains the glass menagerie of the title, is portrayed by Joanna Miles,
while Michael Moriarity plays the "Gentleman Caller," whose presence disrupts
the fragile existence of the Wingfield family unit.

PAUL NEWMAN.............. THE LONG HOT
SUMMER......... 115 MIN
JOANNA WOODWARD....BY WILLIAM FAULKNER
ANTHONY
FRANCIOSA
William Faulkner is regarded as one of America's greatest writers and The Long
Hot Summer is often regarded as one of the best films based on his work. Ben
Quick (Paul Newman), a sullen but self-confident drifter, arrives in a small
Mississippi town where his father had a bad reputation as a firebug. Will Varner
(Orson Welles), the town's patriarch, still holds a grudge against Quick's dad,
and when the young man decides to stay in town and sharecrop on Varner's land,
Will goes out of his way to make his life difficult. However, Will develops a
grudging respect for Quick's guts and determination, and he wishes that his
weak-willed son Jody (Anthony Franciosa) could be more like him; Jody's
wife Eula (Lee Remick) happens to agree. In time, Will gets the idea that
Quick might be a good match for his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) and a
better choice to take over his business dealings than Jody. However, neither
Clara nor Quick care to be told what to do, and besides, Clara already has a
beau -- though Alan Stewart (Richard Anderson) is even more of a milquetoast
than Jody and is led by the nose by his mother. However, sparks begin to
fly between Clara and Quick, and when Jody fears he may lose his place as heir
of Will's estate, he takes drastic action, trapping his father in a barn,
setting it on fire, and planting evidence that would suggest that the blaze was
Quick's doing. The Long, Hot Summer was the first film that Newman and
Woodward made together, and they got married the same year.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DUSTIN HOFFMAN.......... DEATH OF A
SALESMAN.......... 136 MIN
CHARLES DURNING....... BY ARTHUR
MILLER
STEPHAN LANG
JOHN MALKOVITCH
This is a 1966 production of Arthur Miller's classic American play, Death of a Salesman. Dustin Hoffman stars as Willy Loman, the everyman who is suddenly faced with the glaring reality that he is past his prime and has begun living in a self-created fantasy world in which he is not obsolete. The performance also features Stephan Lang as Happy Loman and John Malkovitch as Biff Loman.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AUDREY HEPBURN...........THE CHILDREN’S HOUR.....
108 MIN
SHIRLEY MacLAINE..........BY LILLIAN HELLMAN
JAMES GARDNER
A child’s lie has life-shattering consequences in this daring adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s celebrated play. Karen (Hepburn) and Martha (MacLaine) are the headmistresses of an exclusive school for girls. When they discipline a malicious little girl, the vindictive child twists an overheard comment into slander and accuses her teachers of questionable behavior. Soon the scandalous gossip engulfs the school’s community, with repercussions that are swift, crushing and tragic.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JASON ROBARDS..........THE ICEMAN COMETH....... 210
MINUTES
MYRON MCCORMICK.. BY EUGENE O’NEILL
ROBERT REDFORD
Eugene O'Neill's 1947 Broadway play, The Iceman Cometh, has been described by one theater historian as "a strikingly powerful, if discursive, study of man's desperate need for illusions." The story is set in 1912 at Harry Hope's dingy waterfront saloon. On the occasion of Hope's birthday, several derelicts enter the scene to pontificate on the lives they'd planned, the lives they still dream about, and the wasted lives they wound up with. As the central character Hickey, (Jason Robards) is a loser who's convinced himself that he's a winner.
